THE IDEA

2020 marks the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, which will be recognized with events around the world. Beethoven Rocks Winston-Salem is a communitywide effort that will allow everyone to experience why even today, Beethoven Rocks.

Nearly 30 different area arts organizations are marking the milestone with a series of performances and activities across many different venues and disciplines. Check out the events calendar to learn more.

Filmed over the course of four years, award-winning director Phil Grabsky follows leading concert pianist Leif Ove Andsnes as he travels the world playing sold-out concerts with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in an attempt to understand and interpret one of the greatest sets of piano works for piano ever written: Beethoven’s five piano concertos. Against the backdrop of these performances, the film attempts to peel back the many myths of Beethoven’s life to explore how this prodigious talent from Bonn became one of the world’s greatest composers by the time he wrote the fifth concerto.

During the annual 11-day film festival RiverRun will join in on the celebration of Beethoven by screening the 1994 classic Immortal Beloved starring the incomparable Gary Oldman. This biography chronicles the life of the infamous classical composer and his painful struggle with hearing loss. Following Beethoven's death in 1827, his assistant, Schindler, searches for an elusive woman referred to in the composer's love letters as "immortal beloved." As Schindler solves the mystery, a series of flashbacks reveals Beethoven's transformation from passionate young man to troubled musical genius.
