Beethoven is taking a break.

For the near future, most events scheduled for Beethoven Rocks Winston-Salem have been postponed or cancelled. With a full schedule through December, we hope that other events can be held in coming months. See the event schedule below for more information.

THE IDEA

2020 marks the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, which will be recognized with events around the world. Beethoven Rocks Winston-Salem is a communitywide effort that will allow everyone to experience why even today, Beethoven Rocks.

Nearly 30 different area arts organizations are marking the milestone with a series of performances and activities across many different venues and disciplines. Check out the events calendar to learn more.

Mercedes-Benz of Winston-Salem, which is celebrating its 50th year in 2020, is the presenting sponsor for this grassroots collaboration.

Verona Quartet in Concert

The program celebrates Beethoven’s 250th birth year under the prism of contrast. How will Beethoven sound after hearing the whimsical Clarinet Quintet Spanish Composer Isabel Urrutia wrote just eight years ago? This haunting work recreates the composer’s fascination with the sound of the wind and, in a mere 10 minutes, will set the stage to hear Beethoven from a fresh new angle. UNCSA faculty members Ulrich Eichenauer and Oskar Espina Ruiz collaborate with the renowned Verona Quartet.

Filmed over the course of four years, award-winning director Phil Grabsky follows leading concert pianist Leif Ove Andsnes as he travels the world playing sold-out concerts with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in an attempt to understand and interpret one of the greatest sets of piano works for piano ever written: Beethoven’s five piano concertos. Against the backdrop of these performances, the film attempts to peel back the many myths of Beethoven’s life to explore how this prodigious talent from Bonn became one of the world’s greatest composers by the time he wrote the fifth concerto.
