Orchestra Rocks & Swings: A Mary Starling In-School Education Concert

This interactive concert by the Winston-Salem Symphony invites students to participate with the orchestra from their seats. The Orchestra Rocks & Swings will teach students about rhythm in the year of Beethoven, students will lift their voices and sing Ode to Joy from Beethoven's beloved Symphony No. 9. Curriculum for this performance is provided by Carnagie Hall's Link Up Education Program and is presented in partnership with the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools.

The program celebrates Beethoven’s 250th birth year under the prism of contrast. How will Beethoven sound after hearing the whimsical Clarinet Quintet Spanish Composer Isabel Urrutia wrote just eight years ago? This haunting work recreates the composer’s fascination with the sound of the wind and, in a mere 10 minutes, will set the stage to hear Beethoven from a fresh new angle. UNCSA faculty members Ulrich Eichenauer and Oskar Espina Ruiz collaborate with the renowned Verona Quartet.

Filmed over the course of four years, award-winning director Phil Grabsky follows leading concert pianist Leif Ove Andsnes as he travels the world playing sold-out concerts with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in an attempt to understand and interpret one of the greatest sets of piano works for piano ever written: Beethoven’s five piano concertos. Against the backdrop of these performances, the film attempts to peel back the many myths of Beethoven’s life to explore how this prodigious talent from Bonn became one of the world’s greatest composers by the time he wrote the fifth concerto.

Their recently recorded Beethoven cycle for the “Wigmore Hall Live” record label has received wide acclaim from the classical-music press and listeners alike.
